I 2003 ble Tikopia rammet av den sterkeste syklon som noen gang er målt. I en uke holdt verden pusten i frykt for at alle de 1200 øyboerne var skylt på havet. Mot alle odds overlevde samtlige. Filmen viser gjenoppbyggingen av øya og dens kultur, der tikopianerne bevisst velger fortsatt å leve uten penger, motorer, strøm og andre hjelpemidler. In 2003 Tikopia was hit by the worst cyclone on record. For a week, the world held its breath, fearing that all of the island´s 1200 inhabitants had been washed into the ocean. Against all odds, however, everyone survived. The film depicts the rebuilding of their island and its culture, where the Tikopians continue their tradition of living without money, motors, electric power and other conveniences.

Thomas Lien startet karrieren i Mefistofilm i 1991. I 1994 regisserte han «Dypets Ensomhet» sammen med Joachim Solum. Filmen vant Amanda, Nordisk Panorama og Unge Løve i Venezia. Fra en seks års jordomseiling laget han 5 reisebrev for NRK. Filmen «Tikopia» er et resultat av hans opplevelser på denne jordomseilingen. Thomas Lien career started at Mefistofilm in 1991. In 1994 he directed «Depth Solitude» with Joachim Solum, which won an Amanda Award, the Nordic Panorama Award and the Young Lion Award in Venice. During a six-year round-the-world voyage, he made five travel programmes for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. «Tikopia» is another result of his experiences during this trip.
